First Presbyterian Church of Wayne, Nebraska
Our chief end is to glorify and enjoy God forever.

Who We Are

We are a people, not a steeple.  Our congregation is a vibrant, loving, inter-generational family of believers.  While we come from diverse backgrounds, we are united in our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  Anytime we gather together, whether it's for worship, church school, and fellowship on Sunday mornings, or our legendary church suppers, there is an abundance of warmth, genuine conversation, and joy in the Lord.

The term "Presbyterian" refers primarily to how we in our tradition govern ourselves.  Presbyterians oversee their churches through presbyters (elders and pastors) elected by the congregations, rather than through bishops (purely top-down governance) or the congregation (purely bottom-up governance).  Our local congregation is governed by a session, comprised of 9 elders elected from the congregation and our pastor.  Our unique system of church government served as the model for our United States representational democracy.

We Presbyterians belong to the Reformed theological tradition, which stems from the Swiss Protestant Reformation of the 16th century.  Our patterns of thought flow from the Bible, the early church fathers, and reformers such as Calvin, Zwingli, and Knox.

Our congregation is a member of Homestead Presbytery, a regional governing body made up of congregations throughout eastern Nebraska, except for Omaha.

We are also a member of the Synod of Lakes a Prairies, a larger regional governing body made up of 16 presbyteries in the Midwest and Plains states.

The largest governing body in our church polity is the General Assembly (Office of the General Assembly and General Assembly Council).

Together, along with the other synods and presbyteries, these governing bodies make up the Presbyterian Church (USA).
